African nurse with no right to work was paid thousands by the University of Nottingham

A ZIMBABWEAN trained to be a nurse and earned thousands of pounds in Nottingham, when he did not have leave to stay in the UK, a court heard.

Zvelibanzi Mabandla entered the country legally in 2000 but his application to the Home Office to continue to live here in 2003 was refused.

Instead of pursuing permission to be a UK resident, he obtained a place on a nursing diploma at the University of Nottingham, falsely claiming he had indefinite leave to remain. He received £19,767 in bursary payments, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

After the course, he got agency work between 2008 and 2012, earning £30,551 net, after he provided a false resident's permit to an agency.

He also worked as a mental health nurse, producing the same fake permit, and earned £40,258 net.

He was arrested and charged with three offences of fraud by false representation and six offences of possessing a false identity document.

He admitted the charges at court.

Simon Eckersley, prosecuting, said: "He said he was desperate to stay in the UK. An African person gave him a mobile to ring.

"He was told by that man to send £300 and his passport to a residential address and his passport was returned with a resident's permit in it. He believed it was a genuine document but realises by virtue of his plea it was not.

"He has worked for the NHS, paying tax for a good number of years, the criminal culpability of doing so by means of a false identity document."

Gregor Purcell, mitigating, said his client had been refused the right to stay in an application in 2003 with no right to appeal. He would have known he had no means to remain.

"The figures appear startling in size, but spread over a period of time, it is low-paid work.

"This defendant did not regularise his position."

Judge Jonathan Teare gave 36-year-old Mabandla, of Andover Road, Bestwood, three months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered he do 200 hours of unpaid work in that time.

Mabandla has a Home Office application pending on whether he will be allowed to stay in the country.

Thirty immigrant workers arrested at textile factory in Mansfield (Savanna Rags International Ltd)

THIRTY immigrants working at a textile recycling plant which could face £300,000 in fines have been arrested.

The 27 men and three women were working at Savanna Rags International Ltd, in Forest Road, Mansfield.

Immigration Enforcement officers said 21 of the arrested workers were from Ghana while six Indians, two Nigerians and one person from Niger were also detained.

The immigrants were aged between 23 and 54. Twenty-six had overstayed their visa, three had entered the UK illegally, and one had obtained leave to remain by deception.

Unless the company can prove all right-to-work checks were carried out, it will face fines of £10,000 per worker. This could amount to a total of £300,000 in fines.

Five have been detained pending removal from the UK while the remaining 25 were placed on immigration bail while action is taken to remove them from the country after the raid at around 10am on Wednesday March 19.

Alison Spowage, assistant director for Immigration Enforcement in the East Midlands, said: “This was a large scale operation targeting suspected illegal working in Nottinghamshire.

“We have dedicated and well resourced teams, and the message to employers who chose to flout the law is clear. We will catch you and you will pay a heavy penalty.

“Illegal working exploits some of society’s most vulnerable people. It also undercuts honest employers, cheats the treasury and takes jobs away from those with a legal right to work.

“I would urge members of the public with specific and detailed information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch.”

Jonathan Warburton, HMRC Taskforce Leader, added: “Our taskforce is identifying those employers who operate ‘outside the system’ to avoid paying VAT, PAYE and the National Minimum Wage, which is stealing millions of pounds from local people and the UK economy.

“Paying the National Minimum Wage isn’t optional, it is a worker’s legal right. We will help employers to understand their responsibilities, but will also relentlessly pursue those who deliberately break the law.”

Ban Halal & Kosher Slaughter of Animals in the UK

Halal and kosher slaughter of animals should be outlawed, Britain's leading vet said today.

John Blackwell, president-elect of the British Veterinary Association, has argued the ritual killing of poultry, sheep and cattle by cutting their throats causes unnecessary suffering to animals.

Traditionally, Jewish and Islamic slaughter practices involve animals having their throats slit and the blood drained because it is 'humane'

But Mr Blackwell, who has been accused of 'inflaming prejudice' by religious leaders, says animals must be stunned before the cut because some will be conscious for up to two minutes before death.

The Danish government has been accused of religious persecution after it banned the religious slaughter of animals for halal and kosher meat.

Despite huge pressure from the Muslim and Jewish communities not to, the practice was banned in Denmark last month as the country's Minister for Food, Dan Jorgensen, maintained that 'animal rights come before religion'.

Mr Blackwell said British abattoirs should follow Denmark's example.

'Our view has always been that animals should be stunned. They should be imperceptible to pain as death supervenes,' he told Radio 4's Today programme.


HOW AND WHY RELIGIONS DEMAND RITUAL SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS

HALAL
Halal slaughtering involves cutting through the large arteries in the neck with one swipe of a blade, while a Muslim butcher recites a religious verse. 
All blood is then drained away since the consumption of blood is forbidden under Islamic law.
Under Islamic law, an animal must be slaughtered by having its throat cut while it is conscious.

KOSHER
According to the laws, in order for a meat to kosher it must come from an animal that means the kosher rules.
These are the animal must be ruminant and have split hooves. Ruminant animals chew food once and swallow, before regurgitating it and chewing again.
Animals that Jews can eat include cows, sheep, goats and deer.
They cannot eat pigs despite the fact it has split hooves because it is not a ruminant animal.

Before slaughtering, the animal must be healthy and uninjured and a sharp knife is used to slice through the main arteries and windpipe, causing a drop in blood pressure that causes the animal to lose consciousness. Jews believe this is a way of killing that shows 'respect and compassion' as set out in Jewish law.

Keith Robinson gets 12 years for raping brain-injured woman

A MAN who raped and sexually assaulted a woman with a serious brain injury has been jailed for 12 years.

Keith Robinson’s 23-year-old victim came forward in July 2012, saying he had “done things to her”.

Nottingham Crown Court heard that due to her brain injury, she would not have had any concept of sexual matters.

The jury heard he took advantage of the woman, showing her pornography before sexually assaulting and raping her.

Robinson, 53, of Amesbury Circus, Broxtowe Estate, had pleaded not guilty to rape and causing a person with a mental disorder to watch a sexual act, but was found guilty following a five-day trial.

A psychologist who gave evidence in court said that the victim would not have been mentally able to fabricate and maintain a fictitious account.

Investigating officer DC Justin Harris said: “This was a challenging case with a particularly vulnerable victim and I hope it has highlighted that all victims, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, will be taken seriously and given the necessary support to allow justice to be done.

“The victim and her family are devastated by what happened but have found some solace in the sentence handed down. They feel that they can now begin to move on with their lives.”

Robinson was also sentenced to nine years for further sexual offences and seven months for internet pornography offences, to run concurrently.
