Muslim abuser who 'didn't know' that sex with a girl of 13 was illegal is spared jail

• Adil Rashid admitted travelling to Nottingham and having sex with the girl.
•  He met the 13-year-old on Facebook and they communicated by texts and phone for two months before they met
• He was educated in a madrassa and 'had little experience of women'
• Said he had been taught 'women are no more worthy than a lollipop that has been dropped on the ground'
• Added he was reluctant to have sex but that he was 'tempted by [the girl]'

Earlier the court heard how Rashid had ‘little experience of women’ due to his education at an Islamic school in the UK, which cannot be named for legal reasons.
A muslim who raped a 13-year-old girl he groomed on Facebook has been spared a prison sentence after a judge heard he went to an Islamic faith school where he  was taught that women are worthless.

Adil Rashid, 18, claimed he was not aware that it was illegal for him to have sex with the girl because his education left him ignorant of British law.

Yesterday Judge Michael Stokes handed Rashid a suspended sentence, saying: ‘Although chronologically 18, it is quite clear from the reports that you are very naive and immature when it comes to sexual matters.’

Earlier Nottingham Crown Court heard that such crimes usually result in a four to seven-year prison sentence.

But the judge said that because Rashid was ‘passive’ and ‘lacking assertiveness’, sending him to jail might cause him ‘more damage than good’.

Rashid, from Birmingham, admitted he had sex with the girl, saying he had been ‘tempted by her’ after they met online.

They initially exchanged messages on Facebook before sending texts and chatting on the phone over a two-month period.

They then met up in Nottingham, where Rashid had booked a room at a Premier Inn.

The girl told police they stayed at the hotel for two hours and had sex after Rashid went to the bathroom and emerged wearing a condom.

Enrichment News From Nottinghamshire Courts

TAZEEM Hussain, 51, of Percy Street, Old Basford, was fined £600 for driving an unlicensed taxi. He was in a Vauxhall Vectra in Goldsmith Street, Nottingham, when the vehicle did not have the appropriate licence on October 27 last year.

Magistrates in Nottingham also ordered him to pay a £60 victim surcharge and court costs of £356.58. His licence will be endorsed with six points.

No separate penalty was imposed for having no insurance on the same date. Both charges were proved in his absence.

RAJA Khan, 42, of Radford Road, Hyson Green, has been fined for driving an unlicensed taxi in Broad Street, Nottingham, last October. Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard he was in a Vauxhall Astra without a licence or insurance. Both charges were proved in his absence at court.

He was issued with a £600 fine and must pay a victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £356.58. Six points will be added to his licence.

Basford woman who spat in people's faces given suspended jail term

A WOMAN who launched unprovoked attacks on passersby by in Nottingham has been handed a 15-week suspended prison sentence.

Angela Shand, 40, of Basford, spat at a police officer and members of the public and was abusive to shop staff.

In one incident at about 9pm on August 21 police officers dealing with a road accident in Mansfield Road were alerted to Shand's behaviour by passers by and a shopkeeper, close to the Huntingdon Road junction.

Shand approached a woman in a bus shelter and started to verbally abuse her. She then spat in her face.

When her behaviour was challenged by another woman, Shand then pushed her in the chest.

The unprovoked attack lead to Shand's arrest, during which she again spat in the direction of the two women and at one of the officers arresting her.

While waiting to be sentenced she was arrested again on August 25 outside Asda in Hyson Green, for another unprovoked assault on a man.

Officers have also been called to deal with incidents involving her being abusive to staff and customers of the Debenhams store in Long Row.

And on September 25, Shand was arrested for damaging a car windscreen wiper on North Sherwood Street in another unprovoked attack.

She appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on January 17 and admitted three counts of assault, one count of assault on a police officer and one count of criminal damage.

She was given a 15-week prison sentence, suspended for one year, and was ordered to pay a total of £350 in compensation to the victims of her crimes.

Shand was also issued with a two year Anti Social Behaviour Order upon conviction (CRASBO) meaning she cannot carry open containers of alcohol in the city, must stay away from Debenhams and the Cannon Court alley way, unless for a pre-arranged appointment with the Johnson Partnership Solicitors.

She is also banned from Nottingham Magistrates' Court unless she has a pre-arranged appointment or is visiting the Bridewell Police Station.

Enrichment News from the Nottinghamshire Courts

ABID Hamid, 26, of Dale View Road, Carlton Hill, has been banned from the roads for two years after being caught drink-driving in Radford. Hamid pleaded guilty to driving a Mercedes CLK car in Ilkeston Road on December 20, while he had 94 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. This exceeded the legal limit of 35 micrograms. Hamid was also fined £200, and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £22 victim surcharge. He also admitted a related charge of failing to stop after an accident in which damage was caused to a central reservation and street furniture in Ilkeston Road on December 20. He faced no separate penalty.

A HYSON Green man has admitted making a UK passport application in a false name. Lateef Kareem, 40, of Radford Road, pleaded guilty to committing the fraud on August 8, 2009. He also admitted a second fraud charge by completing a Home Office travel document under a false name on May 25, 2007. Sentencing for both charges was adjourned until Friday, to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared. Kareem has been bailed until that hearing.

Bulwell: Bearded Asian flasher hunt

POLICE are hunting a man who exposed himself to two teenagers waiting at a tram stop. The victims were at Highbury Vale Tram Stop, in Bulwell, when the man approached them. He then exposed himself before running off in the direction of a nearby basketball court. It happened at around 4.15pm on Friday December 21. The suspect is Asian in appearance, aged between 30 and 40 and had a dark beard. He was wearing a grey hooded top, with the hood up, and grey tracksuit bottoms. Officers say they would like to speak to anyone who uses the tram regularly and may recall seeing something suspicious or seeing a man run off towards a basketball court at that time?

Sex fiend hunt

  A man who has tried to grope three women in two separate incidents is being hunted by police.

Two women were walking along Woodborough Road, Mapperley, on Tuesday when they were approached from behind by the man who tried to assault them.

The women turned round and confronted the suspect who ran off while the victims raised the alarm.
It happened at about 5.30am near to the junction with Cranmer Street.
Detectives are linking the report to an incident which happened in Manor Street, Sneinton, at about 10.20pm on Saturday, December 29.
A woman reported being approached by a man who asked for directions. He then attempted to assault her but when she screamed the man ran off.
In both incidents the women were not injured but Notts Police said they have been left "incredibly shaken" by the ordeal.
They have described the suspect as having a distinctive nose which was either turned up and pointy, or may have had a beauty spot on the end.
The man is black, between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 9ins tall, and aged between 25 and 35. He was wearing a dark coloured top or coat with a lighter coloured hood which was worn up. He also wore a pair of jeans with a patch on the right leg.
Patrols have been increased in the area and officers are appealing for anyone with information to call police immediately.
