Nottingham's newly named 'Remembrance Way' already poignantly out of date after death of 454th Afghan veteran

The A453 will serve as a lasting reminder of the continued cost of conflict

The A453 road in Nottingham was renamed 'Remembrance Way' when it re-opened just last Monday.

A man from Kimberley recognised the link between the name of the road and the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The new name was backed by both families in the region who had lost a loved one during the conflict, and the Royal British Legion.

But British soldier Lance Corporal Michael Francis Campbell, has died in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, from wounds he sustained in Afghanistan three years ago - bringing the total loss of life to 454.

The 32-year-old, from Colwyn Bay in North Wales, was shot in the stomach having encountered "accurate, heavy and sustained enemy fire" as he crossed a road.

Tributes have been paid to his bravery, popularity and professionalism.
Proud and professional, he epitomised the ethos of the Army Reservist and he had completed numerous tours duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
– MICHAEL FALLON, DEFENCE SECRETARY

The Battalion has lost a charismatic and loyal friend and our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Chrissie and his wider family at this very difficult time.
– MOD

The A453, now one number short, will serve ever more poignantly as a tribute to the continued cost of conflict.
